Women Represent

While I was a designer at Arrow, some of my colleagues worked on PR for the launch of The 19th News, an independent, nonprofit newsroom covering the intersection of gender, politics, policy and power. As a thank-you, the 19th offered the agency some free digital display ad space on their site and in their email newsletters. Self-promotion was not Arrow’s style though, so I designed a way to use the ad space as a way to further The 19th’s mission — and the mission of the suffragists who started it all.

Show Up. Demand More.

In creating the look for the digital ads and related landing page, I took inspiration from signs, posters, and zines of grassroots organization efforts from past to present. I juxtaposed “cutouts” of historical photos alongside memes and anachronisms to highlight the DIY spirit and timelessness of the message.

The Experience

The digital ads placed on the 19th’s site would elicit clicks with bold messaging that appealed to subscribers: Women Lead. Women Represent. Women Deserve More. Upon clicking, users would be led to a landing page that walks prospective voters through the voting process step by step.

The Landing Page

The page walks prospective voters through the voting process step by step, from voter registration to the ballot box, with helpful links, fun imagery, and cheeky copy along the way. Each step — from “1. Check your registration” through “6. High-five and get your ‘I Voted’ sticker” — is illustrated with a fun image and includes a link to an informative external site, such as vote411.org.
